In this article, Havlock Ellis describes how he was effected when he and his friends first took mescaline. This article is interesting because both because of its scientific value and as a beautiful piece of writing. Although it first appeared in the January 1898, edition of The Contemporary Review, from which this version was taken, it was also reprinted by the Smithsonian Institute in its annual report of 1997--an event not likely to be repeated today.
